The government is committed to increasing the trees cover from the current 7% to 10% by 2022. This was affirmed by the State Department of Environment Principal Secretary Ms. Betty Maina during the Launch of Greening Mua Hills Initiative at Mua Hills, Machakos County.

Betty added that Kenya requires two billion trees in order to achieve the 10% cover. Machakos County will requires to plant 42.5 million trees in the said period. During the launch, 125,000 tree seedling s were distributed to residents of Mua Hills for planting during the current rains.

Ms. Betty challenged the residents to avoid cutting trees without replacing them. “ A large part of environmental responsibilities is not government but lies with the people,” she said. In order to supplement the governments efforts, the people should also buy seedlings for planting. She advised them to buy only from certified nurseries to ensure planting only trees fit for the area and commercially viable. “Fruit trees such as avocado can also provide a tree cover and be used commercially,” she added.

Speaking in the same meeting, the National treasury Principal Secretary, Dr. Julius Muia thanked the Greening Kenya Initiative and the Ministry of Environment for providing the 125,000 seedlings to Mua Hills residents. He also thanked the Department of Correctional Services for transporting the seedlings to Mua Hills.

“We are going to work closely with providers of Green Financing to better the environment,” Muia added. He also promised to make Mua Hills a center of excellence in greening initiatives. At the same time, Dr. Muia said that the government is committed in ensuring the clearing of all genuine pending bills.
