Treasury & Planning CS Prof Ndung’u witnesses signing of Agreement for Nairobi County School Feeding Program
The National Treasury and Economic Planning Cabinet Secretary Prof Njuguna Ndung’u witnessed the the signing of Ksh 1.7 Billion Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement on cooperation implementation of school meals program.
The three years renewable agreement was signed between the Ministry of Education and the Nairobi County Government, aimed at scaling up the feeding program for over 1.9 Million school going children in all public schools.
The agreement was signed between Education CS Hon. Ezekiel Machogu Nairobi County Governor HE Johnson Sakaja at Ministry of Education headquarters.
Speaking during the event CS Prof Ndung’u said the feeding program will have a ripple effect on the economy, increase education attainment and enrollment as well as improve on smart agriculture in the supply chain.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, said the program will be undertaken on 50:50 ratio by the Nairobi County and National government, and added that the government has allocated Ksh 5bilion for the school feeding programs to be expanded to other counties.
Nairobi Governor Sakaja said the program will be one of the largest in Africa , and will create employment opportunities for many people who will be working in the schools and cooking centers.
He said this will lessen the burden to parents, provide necessary nutritional support for majority of low income families living in informal settlements in Nairobi.
