APPOINTMENT OF KRA COMMISSIONER GENERAL
Mr. Humphrey Wattanga Mulongo Appointed Commissioner General for KRA. The Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u has appointed Mr. Humphrey Wattanga Mulongo as the Commissioner General for Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
In a gazette notice issued today 22 nd August 2023, Mr. Humphrey has been appointed to serve for a period of three (3) years, following the completion of a competitive recruitment process by the KRA Board of Directors.
The CS congratulates the new Commissioner with an assurance that the KRA Board of Directors and the National Treasury will give him support to reform KRA to become efficient and friendly to tax payers.
CS Prof. Ndung’u said the appointment will also create an environment of permanency in KRA to undertake necessary reforms aimed at simplifying the tax regime, and reforming the tax instruments, to help build an adequate and strong tax base that will provide enough revenue to finance development.
He said Mr. Mulongo emerged the best candidate from the 13 shortlisted candidates out of the 89 applicants. The KRA Commissioner Generals’ position became vacant after former
Commissioner General Mr. Githii Mburu resigned, and the Board appointed FCCA, CS Rispah Simiyu (Mrs) in an acting capacity. Mr. Wattanga becomes the 7 th Commissioner, and is expected to provide strategic leadership and institutionalize reforms towards customer centricity, digitization as well as domestic revenue mobilization in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, that requires critical dimension of supporting markets to develop and prosper.
Mr. Wattanga brings on board strategic leadership and a wealth of experience having served in various capacities. Until this appointment, he served as the Managing Director, MEGHRAJ Capital and was previously the Vice Chairman of the Commission on Revenue Allocation from 2017 to 2022.
Previously he worked as a senior partner AFCORP Investment, Johannesburg, South Africa from 2004 to 2017. He holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor in Biochemical Science from Harvard University. He is a member of Kenya Institute of Bankers.
